We describe the criminal justice system as a system because it is comprised of several integrated agencies that function together for the ultimate purpose of overseeing criminal justice. When someone speaks of the criminal justice system, she/he is referring to: Law enforcement agencies, the court system (Superior and District Courts), agencies that provide legal representation, and community corrections agencies (Day Reporting, Probation, Parole [where is continues to exist or be necessary despite laws that end parole options for inmates incarcerated prior to a specified date], Youth Services, Community Services, etc), and penal institutions. Usually, this term is also used when discussing legal statutes that mandate and regulate these services.
