Having a conviction does not automatically mean that you will not have your application for a TLC license accepted. Different factors will be taken into consideration such as the nature of your offense; how much time has elapsed since you were convicted; and how old you were at the time of your conviction. On the other hand, if you fail to declare a felony in your application, there is a very good chance that your license will be denied.

Once you have your license you will be required to take a drug test every year in order to keep your license valid. This has to be done within 30 days of your license expiring, but no earlier than this. If you do not take the test within the specified time, your license will not be renewed.

You need to make an appointment for this test at a TLC approved laboratory by calling 1 (800) 923-26254, Monday to Friday from 8.00am and 7.00pm, or Saturday between 9.00am and 12.00pm. You can find a list of the approved labs on this site: http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/downloads/pdf/tlc_drugtest_info.pdf.

Do not leave it until the last minute to make your appointment because you may have to wait 48 hours for an appointment, and they will not accept walk-ins. It also takes about three business days for TLC to receive the results of your test.

When you go for your test you will need to take your TLC license; copies will not be accepted. You will also need your State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) drivers license. If this does not have your photo on it, you will need your temporary DMV license and some other valid photo ID. You will also need the fee of $26 for the test.
