From "Going Postal" by Terry Pratchett.

Moist von Lipwig: (About to be hanged) "I suppose you think this sort of thing works?"

The hangman: "As a generality, yes sir"

Moist: "How's that?"

The hangman: "Well, I've never seen anyone up here more than once!"

I'm personally agains the death penalty, but I guess one thing you could do to collect more conclusive evidence is to look at countries that enforce the death penalty, and then measure "capital crime" rates in countries that enforce the death penalty and those that don't.

I'd be interested to see what results you find.

It was developed many years ago as a possible deterrent to felony crimes, but now it has become a huge fiasco in our Penal system. A jury finds them guilty, and the Judge sentences them to death, and then the inmate sits for years doing appeals and lives a good life in Prison at our expense. So what it was once is no more.
