The main reasons for committing a crime can be due to mental instability of a person. A person who reaches the level of insecurity to a great extent can commit crimes like murder, rape, etc. people with a need or a want commit crimes like burglary, assault, robbery and the like. The basic three reason of committing a crime are poverty, social environment and family structures.

Young children who are generally deprived of education due to low income move in the path of robbery. Children who want to live a higher lifestyle or just want to be known among their peers generally start robbery at home. They try to steal little money from home and later this develops into a habit. If such an act is common among a group of friends then it could lead to a collective burglary attempt by the teen group. Even unemployment proves to be one of the big reasons to crime.

Well it depends on the crime really. If someone is stealing food more then not they are because they are hungry  people who rape do it for the power they feel it gives them over their victims some steal money to pay the bills feed their families or simply to have money to spend on things they want and others do it just because they can  there are way too many crimes to list and the reasons they are commited but that is a few of them

All good answers, but one that is missing is adventure.  Being bad and/or putting oneself in a position where they could get caught constitutes adventure in some people's lives.

Another reason is this: When a person's life has been full of wrongs, cruelty, and blatant unfairness, doing something illegal and profiting from that activity serves to add more balance
