Being a bail bondsman is completely illegal in Canada. Unlike other countries, Canada has a zero-tolerance policy to this kind of activity, considers it immoral and unfair. Bounty hunting is not allowed, as the country uses a system of surety where the person putting up the bail has to meet criteria, and will remain responsible for the supervision of the bonded. They must also appear before one of Canada’s judges to provide exactly who they are.

You’re not allowed to make any profit on putting up the money; this is a criminal offence. Asking or offering to profit on the bail is illegal, too. If you want information on what to do if a criminal skips on your security, then you’ll want to get in touch with an insurance agent in Canada. There are many available; to cover this complicated area of the law.

Many people consider Canada and America as incredibly close countries, not geographically, but in terms of society. The reality is very different! The two countries have completely different histories, and completely different culture, meaning that bounty hunting is not accepted in Canada while it is common practice in some parts of America.

This is not just a legal issue, but also a social issue. Most people in Canada would consider bounty hunting as completely immoral and wrong, whilst many people in the United States would not see an issue with it. Profiting on bail is a touchy issue; so again, get it ouch with a surety insurance agent for more information. They’ll know all the ins and outs of the law in these regards.

It is totally ILLEGAL to be a bail bondsman in Canada. Our legal system DOES NOT allow bondsman or bounty hunting. We use a system of "surety" where the person putting up the bail must meet criteria and is responsible for the supervision of the bonded and must appear before a judge to prove who they are. AND you are not allowed to make any profit on putting up the money it is a criminal offence to ask or offer profit on bail. I am a surety insurance agent. They guy you buy insurance from in case the criminal skips on your surety i.e - car title home title - rrsp ...etc.

It's interesting how you say not to make a profit but the Surety / Insurance agency is making a profit "Selling Insurance / Bail Bonds" does it not?

I can see how things might get lost in translation.

Yeah as far as I know surety bond is important here in canada you cannot just pay  like 500,000 dollars as your bail you need an insurance company that can guarantee that your not going to jump bail.

Personally I do not have any experience being a Bail Bondsman in Canada. However I do not seem to understand how it can be illegal for a Insurance Agency to post bail on your behalf.

It is completely normal for someone to make a profit when posting bail. Normally the Bail Company will use 100% of their own cash to get you out of jail. Much like a credit card, when you borrow money you need to pay some sort of premium.

Regardless of what's legal or not or who is posting - I'm looking for folks whose job it is to find the guys that skipped bail or their court date etc.  Who/what entity is doing that?  It's for a TV show.  In the States we've got a show that's not "dog" it's a show that follows guys into the wilderness to find guys that are trying to drop off the radar and escape the law.  What entity does this kind of tracking in Canada?  Any help or direction would be amazing.  Thanks...

Okay..seriously, The 2nd world country thing....not funny dude.In any sense of the expression. And as for the "Bail Bondsman" thing. No we do not have them. It is illegal. Our equivalent is a provincial Constable or "sheriff". (like me :) ) We serve paperwork like court papers and things like that. It is similar in the sense that we have to track people who are "on the run" down and so fourth. But we don't post bail for people, and are not responsible for them. As long as they get served, lol
