According to crime statistics, there are four different types of robbery. These are personal robbery, business robbery, assault with intent to rob that is personal and an assault with intent to rob that is related to a business.

  • What is robbery?
Robbery is defined as the crime of attempting to take or succeeding in taking something that belongs to another person by force, which usually involves putting the patient through a certain amount of fear.

Robbery is different from theft because it uses force or a weapon. Theft is defined as entering someone's property and taking something that belongs to that person without their consent. The person who carries out a theft is known as a thief.

Other types of robbery can include armed robbery where the person doing the robbing uses a weapon against the victim. Aggravated robbery is where a robbery is committed with a deadly weapon, or something that takes on the appearance of a deadly weapon. Another type of robbery is highway robbery, otherwise known as mugging, that takes place in a public place. Carjacking, another type of robbery is the act of taking a car from another person by force. And finally, extortion is the threat of making a robbery, even if goods are not forcibly taken.

  • Sentencing for robbery.
The actual sentencing for a robbery conviction depends on the severity of the robbery, how much was taken, whether or not there were any casualties involved. It can also vary depending on whether the person conducting the robbery has any previous convictions. The actual sentencing time can vary.

For example, in the state of California, the maximum prison sentence for robbery is 25 years. This sentence will even apply if no weapon was involved and even if the robbery committed was that person's first criminal offense.
