Guthrie's rules on punishment are as follows:
1.The important thing about punishment is not the pain it may cause but what it makes the organism do.
2.To be effective, punishment must cause behavior that is incompatible with the punished behavior.
3.To be effective, punishment must be applied in the presence of the stimuli that elicit the punished behavior.
4. If the conditions specified in 2 and 3 are not met, punishment will be
ineffective or may even strengthen the undesired response.
