Yes it is pretty much legal. Different countries have different laws but there is no law which prevents first cousin marriage.

But what if you are not planning to have children? Birth defects are only an issue if you plan on reproducing. What if you just love each other and want to spend the rest of your lives together?

I believe it is in most States to marry a cousin as long as it is not your 1st cousin.
Why don't you try to Google that question. You might find an answer
there. You may even find explanations, both Civil and religious.
Different religions may have varied views on the subject, especially if
you you intend to marry your cousin.

It's perfectly legal in most countries and about half of US states. Offspring have a very slightly elevated risk of genetic defects, but it is very slight (2-3% higher risk than non-cousins, which makes it almost non-existent.) The idea that you shouldn't marry your cousin appears to be mostly confined to the United States, and only in modern times. Like circumcision, it's just another weird American sex-related taboo, with no basis in reality.

Yes and it is gross.  There are thousands of people in the world.  You need to meet more people and quit hanging out with family so much.  Your children will come out mentally retarded.  What is wrong with you?  Has your parents not taught you any morals.

Pitbull,    Not all the offspring of first cousin matings  "will come out mentally retarded" to use your words.   Also there is family physical disease too.    Though the risk of genetic disease ie Cystic Fibrosis is higher in first cousin offspring ,many offspring are normal.  I was taught that the chances of genetic disease among such children is 8 times higher than in unrelated parents. This is because first cousins share 1/8 of their genes in common.
I wonder do you think it gross to mate parent and child and brother and sister ,(both sharing 50 per cent of their genes ) as breeders do to create pedigree animals!. Just interested in how you feel about that practice. Cheers.

You need to check your state laws as it varies from state to state.  Even if legal, not a good idea because of possible birth defects, lower intelligence, etc.

I do not know if it is legal in Texas to marry your 1st cousin ./// But I do have some facts for you.// First cousins share, on average, one eighth of their genes.in common . But second cousins ,being the offspring of 1st cousins share 1/32nd in common.//// Not sure what you mean when you say "i am the 2nd cousin"./// The genetic relationship of ones 1st cousins child to you is a 1st cousin once removed, sharing on ave.1/16th

It is legal in about 18 states to marry a first cousin. Six states allow it under special circumstances.

As far as birth defects, the rate among cousins is only 2-3% higher than non-cousins.

And while people may freak out about the idea, marriage among first cousins was very common in this country from colonial times into the 20th century.

As far as I know its not illegal to marry your 1st cousin.  However, it should be.  I mean that's a little too close to home.  Cousins are almost like brothers and sisters.

Genetically speaking cousins are NOT almost like siblings. Full cousins share 1/8 of their genes in common ( second cousins share 1/32 . ) Siblings share 50 per cent. That is a big difference from first cousins.

It is only illegal to mary first cousin in only 20 of the states of the United states. Check it out.  Royalty practice it explicitly to keep their gene pool pure and the assets in the family.  Get informed.

You are correct royalty do practice this and have done repeatedly, which makes a lot of royal couples related several times over down through different sides/lines, for example the queen and the d of edin. Queen Vict. And Albert were 1st cousins. Queen Vic. Arranged many royal relations to marry. As far as keeping gene pool "pure" ,it depends what the definition of "pure " is in royal lines. It is certainly a more "closed" gene pool than in the general public but "pure" it is not!!

1st Cousin? It is absolutely Illegal in the United States of America. Your children could potentially come out with severe birth defects as a result of your choice. Dude, Rethink that!

This answer is NOT true. There are several states that you can LEGALLY marry your first cousin.
My first cousin and I are in love with each other and have looked into getting married.
As for severe birth defects, that's NOT true either. You need to do your homework.
In the Bible, there were several first cousins who were married.Jesus' parents were first cousins.

Inbreeding is bad news generally speaking. That is why Pedigree dogs are suffering so much. Cystic Fibrosis is 8 times higher in the offspring of first cousins because of the shared carrier grandparent passing it to the two cousins. It is to do with recessive mutated genes being inherited in a double dose causing the defect. In Jewish first cousin marriages Tay Sachs disease is higher in these offspring. Animals prefer to choose unrelated mates where there is a choice .

In Jesuses day there was not the high degree of mutated genes in the human genepool that exist today. Also Jesus was not of Joseph, according to the bible. In the old testament there were many close relatives having children together but the genepool was more perfect then by far. The answer from northener is a bit misleading as I believe there are countries and ethnic communities where 1st cousin marriages are allowed.
