Firearm registration laws can lead to the identification and prosecution of violent criminals by helping law enforcement quickly and reliably “trace” (identify the source of) firearms recovered from crime scenes.

Thee problem with that logic is most violent criminals do not use registered guns. They use ones that have been illegally obtained.

Laws vary by state. Generally the background check does not register you. That is backwards. Applying to register a gun at purchase will trigger a background check. If you pass you are allowed to have the gun and the gun will be registered. Some states just require a background check without registering a gun.
