Robbing is you take a person's property or possession without his or her permission while they are watching you, which usually is done by force. Stealing is getting someone's property or possessions without his or her permission when they aren't around.

to steal: To take something which is not yours

To rob means to take away directly from you by using your physical force or in your absence - it was for a personal reason.. but stealing is without any personal intention and it would be for his necessity..he may take your belongings or some others' items which are with you..
