I agree 100% with the steps and the way the problem was solved, but I think they missed a little detail. If "x" correspond to 1 bedroom apartment, and "Y" Correspond to two bedroom apartments, then the answer is  not x=5. "x" represents  one bedroom apartments and they are actually asking for the number of the 2 bedroom apartments which is y=7. Why?
X+y=12 so 5+y=12, y=7. The correct answer is 7.

Two Equations come from the word problem:4950 = 360x + 450yx + y = 12Solve for x in second equation:x + y = 12x = 12 - ySubstitute new x value in first equation and solve for y:4950 = 360(12 -y) + 450y4950 = 4320 - 360y + 450y4950 = 4320 + 90y650 = 90y7 = yLastly, plug new y value into either equation. The second is easier:x + y = 12x + 7 = 12x = 5Hope this helps!

Sorry about the spacing, I'm new to this. I'll try to make it appear as I intended it to.

First Equation: 4950 = 360x + 450y
Second: X + y = 12
Solve for x using second equation: X = 12 - y
Replace x with that value in first equation: 4950 = 360(12 -y) + 450y
continued ....

Solving previous equation....
4950 = 4320 - 360y + 450y
4950 = 4320 + 90y
650 = 90y
7 = y
Plug this into the second equation to get x:
X + y = 12
x + 7 = 12
x = 5
