Is it illegal to "hitch rides"? I saw 2 women and 1 girl making the gesture and bam! 2 police cars closed in on them. I don't like rubbernecking so I could not see what ended up happening. Just drove past it. I don't know where the hell cops came from, I guess it was just prefect timing...

It depends on your state law.

I don't know why it would be illegal, though, as long as you aren't creating a traffic hazard.  At least in the US.  We have a "freedom to travel", allegedly.  And I don't know of any good reason to make it illegal for pedestrians to signal they would appreciate a ride.

Yeah but there is good reason that I would not be jumping in a random persons car. Would you? not unless I was desperate considering all the things that couldn't happen.

That is not a valid reason to make it illegal.
Nobody would be forcing pedestrians to hitch-hike, if it was legal. It would still be their choice.

I agree with you 100% on that.

In most states, it is illegal to hitchhike on major highways.  It creates a hazard when people pull over.

Yeah I only asked because it was residential type area the road was 25mph but the majority drive 35 on it. One of those roads that safety came more naturally then the posted limit. They dont always suggest the safest limit because roads change and stuff.

As others have said it depends on the state, but I think in most places if a cop sees someone hitch hiking with a child, (since you said a girl) they would stop to make sure they were not stranded, or in need of help. Since hitch hiking can be dangerous, to do so with a child would presumably be someone in need of help.
